Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez is set to start for Argentina in this evening’s FIFA World Cup qualifier against Bolivia.
This according to Argentine broadcaster TyC Sports, via FCInterNews. They report that the Nerazzurri captain will take the place of Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez in the lineup.
This evening, Argentina take on Bolivia in a World Cup qualifying match.
This will be the Albiceleste’s second of two matches during the international break.
Argentina drew 1-1 with Venezuela in their first match of the break last week. That point was still enough to leave them top of CONMEBOL qualifying for the moment.
Inter captain Lautaro Martinez did not start for Argentina against Venezuela.
Rather, it was Atletico Madrid and former Manchester City and River Plate striker Julian Alvarez who led the line for the Albiceleste.
Martinez and Alvarez have duelled for the starting spot for Argentina for the past couple years.
It had been the Inter player who had gone into the 2022 World Cup in Qatar as the first-choice starter.
However, Martinez was far from his best and failed to score or assist a goal in Argentina’s first two matches. Therefore, Alvarez got the chance in the starting lineup.
And Alvarez held down the starting role for the rest of the tournament, which Argentina won.
Ever since then, both Martinez and Alvarez have had their chances to start for the Albiceleste regularly.
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has alternated the two strikers. Moreover, typically whichever of the two has not started has come off the bench in matches.
That was the case against Venezuela last week. Martinez came on as a substitute in the second half of that match.
The Inter captain was not the regular starter for Argentina at the Copa America this summer either.
However, Martinez certainly proved his worth with his displays off the bench. He scored five goal, making him the tournament’s top scorer. This included the winner in the final against Colombia.
And TyC Sports reports that Martinez will get the nod in this evening’s clash with Bolivia.
