Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez will have one eye on the derby record of Andriy Shevchenko against AC Milan this evening.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

The derby is a match that Martinez seems to enjoy a good relationship with.

The Argentine has played in fifteen matches against city rivals AC Milan since joining Inter in 2018. He has won ten, lost three, and drawn two.

Not just that – Martinez’s record in the derby is also very good on a personal level.

There is perhaps no big fixture in which the Inter captain shines brighter. He saves his best for the derby, rather than, for example, matches against Juventus.

Martinez was not on the scoresheet against Milan in last September’s 5-1 Serie A win.

However, the Inter captain scored in three of the four previous meetings with the Rossoneri. He scored in Supercoppa Italiana and Champions League triumphs, as well as getting the decisive goal in a 1-0 Serie A win last season.

Martinez has admittedly not been in the greatest form of late.

The 26-year-old has not found the back of the net for Inter since the end of February.

That means that Martinez is stuck on 23 Serie A goals – nothing to scoff at, but no longer enough to chase a place in the record books at this stage.

But if there’s a fixture in which Martinez will feel that he can reignite his prolific season, it’s this one.

Martinez has already scored eight goals against AC Milan.

That already puts the Inter captain ahead of greats like Jose Altafini, Bentio Lorenzi, Roberto Boninsegna, and Alessandro Altobelli for derby goals.

Meanwhile, Inter legends Sandro Mazzola and Diego Milito are also behind Martinez, with six goals against the Rossoneri.

But there are still some past greats for Martinez to chase.

If Martinez can score a brace this evening, he’d catch Enrico Candiani and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Further ahead, there are the likes of Gunnar Nordahl and Istvan Nyers, on eleven derby goals each.

Giuseppe Meazza scored thirteen goals in the derby throughout his career. But leading the way for derby goals is legendary former Milan, Chelsea, and Ukraine striker Andriy Shevchenko.

Shevchenko scored a whopping fourteen goals against Inter as a Rossoneri player.

Clearly, catching the Ukrainian will take some time for Martinez.

However, the Inter captain is 26. Time is on his side, and the derby is a fixture he has proven to be prolific in.

Martinez will feel that a goal – or a couple – this evening would be another step towards the all-time record.
