Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez could start the Nerazzurri’s Serie A clash with Atalanta after recovering from a muscle injury.

This according to Italian outlet Gazzetta.it. The Gazzetta report that Martinez and Mehdi Taremi are in a run-off to start alongside Marcus Thuram in attack in Friday’s match.

Martinez was not part of Inter’s squad for last Saturday’s match against Lecce.

The Argentine was absent due to a muscle problem that he’d picked up in training.

Martinez had started against Genoa in Inter’s first Serie A match of the season. He did so despite having only returned to preseason training a little before the match.

However, there was evident rust in Martinez’s performance against the Grifone.

And then, the Inter captain picked up some muscular fatigue in the lead-up to last weekend’s match against Lecce.

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi admitted after Saturday’s match that he was not sure if Martinez would be able to play in Friday’s match against Atalanta.

Naturally, the coach is hardly going to take any risks with Martinez’s fitness.

However, the 27-year-old has been working in training to get back to fitness.

And according to the Gazzetta, Martinez has now put his injury behind him.

The Nerazzurri captain has recovered from the muscle problem, and completed a training session today with his teammate.

Nevertheless, there is still plenty of doubt about whether Martinez can regain match-fitness in time for Friday’s match.

There is no doubt that the Argentine will be part of the squad. But there is a good chance that he will still only be on the bench for the match.

But according to the Gazzetta, a start would not be out of the question.

Martinez is now working rapidly to try and get ready to start on Friday. He could move Taremi, who started alongside Thuram last Saturday, to the bench.
