Inter are always on the lookout for opportunities to sign players available on free transfers.

Normally, this means looking to the summer transfer window.

Typically contracts for players at European clubs run until the end of June, as that coincides with the end of the typical European season.

However, the South American season runs on a different timeline that than of Europe.

Teams in the Brazilian and Argentine leagues tend to play on a schedule that coincides roughly with the calendar year.

Therefore, the contracts of players in Brazil run out at the end of December rather than the end of June.

This means that the opportunity to sign players on free transfers from the Brazilian league tends to coincide with the January transfer window in European football.

This could give teams like Inter the opportunity to make midseason reinforcements without spending on transfer fees.

And according to Italian journalist Barzaghi, there is one name in particular who Inter are looking at to bring in from the Brazilian league, whose contract is just a couple of months away from running out.

Inter, Leverkusen & Atletico All Want Corinthians Defender Bruno Mendez

Speaking about Inter’s defender plans, journalist Barzaghi named Mendez as a target.

Tiago Djalo is not the only free transfer they want,” he said.

“There’s a new name, and it’s that of Bruno Mendes,” he noted. “Currently at Corinthians.”

“He’s a 24-year-old Uruguayan, born in 1999. Bielsa played in him in a recent friendly against Cuba.”

Barzaghi said of Mendez that “He’ll be available on a free on December 31st. His contract is expiring and he’s not planning to renew it.”

He noted that “Bayer Leverkusen, Atletico Madrid, and Inter are all keen on him.”

“He’s a very interesting profile,” the journalist noted. “He’s quick. He can play in the centre of a back three, in the wide role, or on the wing. He’s definitely one to follow.”
