Di Gennaro, who came through the youth ranks at Inter, made his first ever appearance for the club this evening.

All season long, the Italian has been Inter’s third-choice keeper.

The Nerazzurri brought Di Gennaro back last summer, as part of an overhaul of the goalkeeping position.

Di Gennaro was hardly ever expected to play regularly for Inter. But given his longstanding connection to the club, the 30-year-old has brought some continuity and stability to the dressing room.

That kind of influence may not be immediately evident on the pitch. But it has played an important role in strengthening the group.

That is why Inter coach Inzaghi decided to give Di Gennaro his chance to play in the team’s final Serie A match of the season.

The coach had done something similar with Alex Cordaz last campaign.

Di Gennaro’s substitute appearance in the second half of this evening’s match at the Bentegodi was actually his first ever for Inter.

Despite having come through the youth ranks, the goalkeeper had never made a senior appearance in any of his other spells with the Nerazzurri.

Di Gennaro said that “The coach told me [about the plan to give him an appearance against Verona] in front of the rest of the squad.”

“I thank him,” the 30-year-old said of Inzaghi. “Because nothing is ever owed to anyone in football.”

He added that “I have to thank he and his coaching staff.”

“Because they took me on board right from the start of the season, and helped me to grow.”

“I always put my all into it every day,” Di Gennaro added.

“And I was rewarded for it. I’m, still buzzing.”

Di Gennaro said that “It was an incredible season, just perfect.”

“My son was born. We won the twentieth Scudetto in our history.”

“We have an incredible group,” said Di Gennaro. “It’s truly an honour to be a part of this group, which made me feel important right from the start.”

“Even though I only played my first match for the club today, they’ve been encouraging me all the way since preseason.”

“They’ve always em,braced me,” Di Gennaro added.

The goalkeeper concluded that “For me, these are beautiful things. It’s exciting to talk about them.”
