Inter are hoping that wing-back Denzel Dumfries can prove himself in an Inter shirt as he steps in for the injured Matteo Darmian over the next few matches.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who report that the Nerazzurri are looking for a response from the 25-year-old who has been training to become more comfortable in Italian football.

Dumfries has impressed sporadically since his arrival at Inter from PSV over the summer, but he has not managed to displace Darmian from the starting spot on the right.

However, the former Torino, Manchester United, and Parma defender is set to miss at least the next three matches with a thigh strain and so Dumfries will be called upon in his place.

Danilo D’Ambrosio is also a potential option in the right-sided wing-back role, but the 33-year-old has not played in the position under Simone Inzaghi at any point so far.

The Nerazzurri are hoping to see the personalized training sessions aimed at bringing Dumfries up to the necessary level pay off, and if progress is not seen by Christmas they could once again turn to Cagliari’s Nahitan Nandez to bolster the squad in January.
