Inter captain Samir Handanovic has been linked with a move away, a role on the bench, or even retirement from football, but his performance against Atalanta yesterday showed how much he has left to give.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, who argue that the 37-year-old proved his worth with his display to keep La Dei off the scoresheet at the Gewiss Stadium.

Handanovic’s current contract is set to expire at the end of June, and he is yet to agree on an extension though it is expected that one will be offered.

Andre Onana will arrive from Ajax as the long-term successor to the captain in goal, and the Slovenian could stay on to rotate with or back up the newcomer while he settles in.

However, his array of fine saves against La Dei yesterday evening showed that despite having come in for some criticism this season, Handanovic still has it in him to be a high-quality starting option, at Inter or elsewhere.
