A quiet first half with few chances to note was brought alive for a brief moment when Nexaca goalkeeper, Luis Malagón, was called into action to keep out Roger Martínez in the 22nd minute.

After a swift combination in midfield, Richard Sánchez slid in the Colombian forward but Malagón was alert to the danger and in rushing out of his goal closed down the angle, saving Martínez’s attempt with his foot.

The hosts attempted to be more adventurous in the second period and could’ve taken the lead through Rodrigo Aguirre. The Uruguayan ghosted away from his marker in the box but his acrobatic effort was expertly saved by Guillermo Ochoa.

América themselves had two great chances to break the deadlock. First, three yards out, Henry Martín was unable to turn in Alejandro Zendejas’s cross before Zendejas himself saw his shot fly inches wide of the post.

It looked like it wouldn’t happen for the visitors despite their domination until Diego Valdés popped up in the 91st-minute. Malagón was able to keep out Richard Sanchez’s free-kick but could only divert it into the path of the Chilean midfielder who poked home the winner into an empty net.
