“I’m hopeful” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits he wants more signings

After the debacle of last summer, few would have predicted that Manchester United would have signed their two top targets before the end of July.

Tom Heaton’s arrival from Aston Villa was hardly a surprise but the goalkeeper, who returns to the club after graduating from the academy, is unlikely to feature regularly.

Instead, it was Jadon Sancho who stole the headlines for the majority of this summer. The 21-year-old was strongly linked with a move to the Old Trafford club and after a deal collapsed last year, it looked likely that United would test Dortmund’s resolve again this time around.

Shortly after Sancho was officially unveiled, the club announced that it had reached an agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of Raphael Varane, who will join after completing a medical.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be delighted to have two integral players through the door early but the Norwegian boss has admitted he wants more.

“I’m hopeful there might be a little more business done before the summer window closes,” he wrote in the pre-match programme ahead of United’s pre-season fixture against Brentford, as per journalist Simon Peach.

“I’m also mindful that a lot of our squad members underwent great development on loan last term, so there’s no question we go into this season in better shape than last season. Competition for places will be even more fierce in this campaign.”
