Kieran Maguire is “hearing” that a Premier League meeting will soon take place but says West Brom won’t be handed a points deduction.

The football finance expert and new Football Insider columnist spoke exclusively as the Baggies find themselves in hot water over Robert Snodgrass’s move from West Ham to the Hawthorns.

The two clubs reportedly came to an agreement that Snodgrass would not feature in Tuesday evening’s fixture, in which West Ham beat West Brom 2-1.

Such an arrangement contravenes Premier League regulation 17, which states: “No Club shall enter into a contract which enables any other party to that contract to acquire the ability materially to influence its policies or the performance of its teams in League Matches or matches in any other recognised competition.”

But Maguire believes this gaffe is unlikely to lead to any serious ramifications for West Brom.

Asked whether this indiscretion might damage their reputation among other clubs, he told Football Insider“It won’t impact them going forward, not at all. It shouldn’t have been included in the clause anyway but it’s not actually in the written contract because that would be a breach of regulations.

“It appears to be some sort of gentleman’s agreement between the two clubs, and if you have a gentlemen’s agreement, keep it between the gentlemen involved would be my advice… Don’t go broadcasting it on BT Sport.

“I’m hearing there is a meeting of Premier League owners taking place in the next couple of days. If it is raised, I think it will be raised informally, it’s highly unlikely to be a points deduction.

“Sam Allardyce lost the England job by being too indiscrete. I think in some respects as a manager he’s underrated but he likes playing the ‘Big Sam’ role too much.”

Allardyce revealed in his pre-match press conference: “[We agreed] this game he [Snodgrass] wouldn’t be allowed to play. If we needed to get the player, which we did, we had to agree to that.”

The 33-year-old’s contract was up at the end of the season after four years with West Ham, for whom he made 86 appearances.
