‘I’ll hold my tongue’ – Luis Enrique sets conditions for discussing Kylian Mbappé’s PSG future

Even when he isn’t on the pitch, Kylian Mbappé (25) remains a topic of conversation. After having a decisive impact in Paris Saint-Germain’s victory over Barcelona in midweek, the France captain rediscovered a familiar position when Ligue 1 action returned to the Parc des Princes on Sunday night – the PSG bench.

“Sooner or later, we’re going to have to get used to playing without Mbappé,” Luis Enrique has repeated in recent times. After Mbappé told president Nasser Al-Khelaifi that he would be leaving his club upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the season, the Frenchman has played a more peripheral role in Ligue 1.

With the title all but sealed, Luis Enrique is planning for the future in the remaining league games, which has seen Mbappé often dropped to the bench. That was the case for Olympique Lyonnais’ visit on Sunday evening. PSG beat Les Gones 4-1, strengthening their grasp on the title, which could be wrapped up as early as Wednesday. However, Mbappé did not make it off the bench.

When will Mbappé’s departure become official?

The PSG forward was nonetheless a topic of conversation post-match. Whilst Mbappé’s departure is football’s worst-kept secret, no official announcement has been made, and Luis Enrique has said that he won’t be commenting on the topic until other parties have done so.

“I have nothing to say. Until the [relevant] parties have spoken, I’ll hold my tongue and when the [relevant] parties have spoken, I’ll talk about it,” said the Spaniard. For as long as PSG could hypothetically face Real Madrid, reportedly Mbappé’s future club, in this season’s UEFA Champions League, an official announcement is unlikely.
