Erik ten Hag admits this season has been a “mess” but says he will “win trophies somewhere else” if Manchester United no longer want him as manager.

The United boss ended a difficult season which saw his team finish a club-record low eighth place in the Premier League by lifting the FA Cup at Wembley following a 2-1 win over rivals Manchester City.

Speculation has surrounded the future of ten Hag and whether he will still be at the club next season.

But speaking to ITV Sport after the game when asked whether he will remain at Old Trafford, ten Hag said: “I don’t have doubts but it’s of course not up to me.

“I am in a project. When we came, we were absolutely at a low. We performed, we improved, and the squad last season reached two finals and we won the Carabao Cup, we were third in the league.

“This season, it’s a mess, it’s true, but the reasons are there.

“But in the end we won a trophy. Underneath you see the team is developing, underneath you see players developing. There is high potential but it needs time.”

And in his press conference, the United boss added: “When I took over it was a mess at Man Utd and we are on our way to construct a team for the future.

“It will go with ups and downs and what you see is the team developing, the team is winning, at the end of the day it’s about winning trophies. The team plays to an identity but you need the players to be available and you need a top squad.

“There is still a lot of work to do but we are exactly where we are. We have value in the squad, high potential who are progressing, the team is progressing, and we are winning trophies.

“Two trophies in two years and three finals is not bad but we have to keep going. I’m not satisfied with it, we have to do better, and if they don’t want me any more then I go anywhere else to win trophies because that is what I’ve done my whole career.”
