Carlton Palmer has given his verdict on Che Adams’ upcoming contract decision.

The forward is set to be a free agent in the summer, and will need to decide on his next club, should he depart Southampton.

According to Teamtalk, Wolves and Leeds United are both circling ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

No decision has been made over his future, but the option to compete in the Premier League again will surely be quite appealing.

Meanwhile, Leeds’ promotion status is still far from guaranteed as we approach the final few games of the regular season.

Palmer believes that Adams would be a good addition to the side competing in the Premier League.

He has highlighted his experience at that level, as well as with Scotland, that makes him a valuable potential signing for Wolves or Leeds.

“It’s almost certain that Che Adams will depart Southampton in the summer,” Palmer told Football League World.

“He’s been offered a new contract, he hasn’t put pen to paper.

“He was disappointed that he wasn’t allowed to leave the football club, which is the football club’s right.

“If the deal wasn’t right, then of course he shouldn’t be allowed to leave the football club.

“That has been a problem for Che, but even still he hasn’t been a regular starter for Southampton this season.

“He’s still chipped in with 14 goals.

“He’s got valuable international and Premier League experience, so the two clubs who are said to be very keen on him are Wolves and Leeds United.

“At the end of the day, he wouldn’t move, and he made that very clear, to a club that was going to struggle in the Premier League.

“He didn’t want another relegation.”

Key factor behind Adams’ transfer decision

Palmer believes that game time will be the key factor in deciding Adams’ future, as long as Leeds earn promotion to the top flight.

“Gary O’Neil has done a fantastic job at Wolves, and he’s proven what a good manager he is,” he added.

“At the end of the day, Leeds United under Daniel Farke have done really, really well, they’re pushing for an automatic place.

“It’s going to be nip and tuck between the three teams, three points separating the top three teams in the league, it’s going to go all the way to the wire.

“For Leeds to have any chance of signing Che Adams they’ve got to be in the Premier League.

“Then it’s the opportunity of playing.

“Che won’t want to go to Wolves and be sat on the bench, or anywhere sat on the bench.

“But I think it would be a good move.

“I’d like to see him at Leeds United, but I think it would be a good move for Wolves and Gary O’Neil if they were able to capture his signature.

“But I’m sure there are going to be other interested parties in Che Adams because he’s available on a free transfer, and that would be a great bit of business for a player that has international and Premier League pedigree.”

Adams has featured 35 times in the Championship so far this season, but only 21 of those appearances have come as starts (all stats from Fbref).

He has contributed 13 goals and three assists, with Russell Martin’s side sitting fourth in the table.

Adams will prioritise Premier League above all else

Adams now has multiple clubs chasing his signature for next season, which is a great negotiating position for him to be in.

Southampton took a risk by not cashing in on him last year, and are now set to lose a high-value asset for nothing.

A move to the Premier League will surely be his priority, although game time will also be key

If Leeds or Southampton fail to gain promotion to the top flight, then Wolves will be well-placed to win the race to sign the Scotland international.
