Ian Poveda should look to re-sign for Sheffield Wednesday in the summer transfer window despite interest from elsewhere.

That's according to Carlton Palmer, who believes a permanent return to Hillsborough is the best move the winger can make for his career.

Poveda joined the Owls on loan from Leeds United back in the January transfer window and made 10 appearances for the club in the second half of the campaign.

The 24-year-old was hampered by injuries during his time with Sheffield Wednesday but still impressed with his performances when fit and available.

As a result, there is now plenty of speculation around Poveda, whose future is set to be up in the air over the course of the next few months.

As things stand, the winger's contract with parent club Leeds is due to expire at the end of this season.

That, of course, means he will be available on a free transfer this summer, something several clubs are seemingly keen to take advantage of.

It has already been reported that Sheffield Wednesday are keen to re-sign the Colombian international on a permanent basis.

Meanwhile, reports have claimed that their Championship rivals Sunderland, as well as Luton Town and Burnley, who are both set to be relegated from the Premier League, are also keen on the 21-year-old.

Carlton Palmer delivers verdict on Ian Poveda future

With so much interest in his services, there is plenty for Poveda to consider when it comes to deciding his next move.

Palmer though, believes that his most sensible option would be to stick with where he knows he can get regular football, by returning to Hillsborough on a permanent basis.

When asked by Football League World if Sheffield Wednesday was still the best move for Poveda given that interest from elsewhere, the former Owls and England man said: "Ian joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan and has quickly become a fans' favourite. He was part of the squad that stayed in the Championship and was a very integral part of that.

"He played very, very well and all the players speak very highly of Danny Rohl. I think Poveda has to be very careful now. He didn't have game at Leeds United, he needs to move somewhere where he is going to have game time.

"Of course, Burnley and Luton are going to be in the Championship next season, Sunderland are going to be in the Championship. I think the best fit for him is where he is, Sheffield Wednesday.

"Join a club where you enjoy, he's become a fans' favourite. Join a club where you're playing regular football where you're enjoying your football, where you're enjoying playing for the manager.

"It's not just about the money, you have to look at where you're going to play your best football, where you're going to play continually, where the fans enjoy seeing you and where the manager is playing you in your right position, where you're enjoying your football and you understanding what you're doing.

"I think still the best fit for him is joining Sheffield Wednesday where he spent the second half of the season on loan and excelled."

Poveda's contributions helped Sheffield Wednesday complete a great escape from relegation from the Championship last season, meaning they are now preparing for another season in the second-tier.

Move to Sheffield Wednesday could make sense for Ian Poveda

There is certainly an argument that a permanent move back to Hillsborough could be the best thing for Poveda to do this summer.

At his age, he is at the stage of his career where he does need to start playing regularly, and plant himself firmly in a position where he can start to develop his career.

Given how he performed at Sheffield Wednesday, and the fact he got game time there when fit and available, means that he could be confident of doing that with a move back to the Owls.

Indeed, given the excellent form they showed under Rohl following his appointment back in October, Wednesday will surely be aiming much higher than a relegation battle next season.

That should ensure that a return to Hillsborough would also give Poveda the chance to make positive progress in his career, with a move back to the club.

With that in mind, it would surely make sense for all involved if the winger was indeed to return to Sheffield Wednesday over the course of the summer.
