Mikey Johnston has reflected on a ‘happy period’ in his career at West Brom, as he admitted his disappointment that they couldn’t win promotion to the Premier League.

The winger joined Albion on loan from Celtic in January, and he enjoyed a remarkable run of form for the Baggies, scoring six goals in his first nine games, with some of those incredible individual efforts, and he ended up with seven in 20 games.

It wasn’t just the goals though, as Johnston was a constant threat for Carlos Corberan’s side as they secured a top six finish, as he impressed with his pace and skill down the flanks.

Ultimately, the season ended in disappointment for West Brom, as they lost over two legs to Southampton in the play-offs, with the 3-1 defeat at St. Mary’s Stadium Johnston’s last appearance for Albion as it stands.

Mikey Johnston sends emotional West Brom message

That’s because the Irish international is now scheduled to return to parent club Celtic this summer, although it would be a real surprise if Albion didn’t at least try to bring him back to The Hawthorns.

And, it seems Johnston certainly enjoyed his time in the West Midlands, as he took to Instagram to send a message to the fans.

I wish it could’ve finished differently but still such a happy period of my career. An amazing club with such good people. Thank you for everything West Brom, and to the fans for the unbelievable support you’ve given myself and the team all season.”

Mikey Johnston transfer latest

Despite his brilliant form at West Brom, it’s hard to see Johnston having a future at Celtic Park.

Brendan Rodgers sanctioned a move for the 25-year-old in January, and it was telling that he did so, as the Glasgow giants were not well stocked with quality options out wide, yet he still didn’t feel as though he needed Johnston.

Therefore, with a new winger sure to come through the door in the summer, it’s hard to see Johnston having a role to play, meaning he is likely to be up for sale.

But, Celtic are in a position to command a decent fee, as the attacker is under contract until the summer of 2026, so they aren’t under pressure to cash in.

West Brom’s summer transfer plans

It’s set to be a huge summer for Albion, with the club already confirming that a host of players will move on following their deals expiring.

The ownership situation does change a lot for the Baggies, as they are now in a position where they can look forward to the window with optimism, and Corberan will hope to be given some backing by Shilen Patel after searching for bargains under the previous regime.

You would imagine that they want to bring Johnston back permanently, but the deal has got to be right, and the summer market should open up more opportunities than Albion had in January.

So, it will be interesting to see what business they can get done, and whether they pursue a deal for Johnston. But, either way, Corberan will be expected to build a squad that can push for the play-offs as a minimum next season.
