Former Blue Gus Poyet has claimed the penalty drama involving Cole Palmer and his team-mates is the “fault of society.”

Poyet spent four years at Stamford Bridge where he won an FA Cup, UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup.

The ex-midfielder was shocked just like everyone as he watched the penalty drama unfold during the Blue’s 6-0 win against Everton.

After a penalty was awarded in the second half Noni Madueke grabbed the ball and then had a heated exchange with Nicolas Jackson, before captain Conor Gallagher stepped in and handed the ball to Palmer.

The 21-year-old stepped up and scored his ninth penalty of the season to keep up his 100% record for the club from the spot.

Poyet had a surprising take on the drama that unfolded and speaking exclusively to Daily Star Sport said:

“I think that it’s the fault of society, 30 years ago, the coach will say to the team, ‘you are the penalty taker and if he doesn’t want to take it, you take it’.

“I remember it was a coach who used to say, if you get fouled and it hurts, even if you are the penalty taker, you are not taking the penalty.

“The world has changed and slowly people were allowing the players to decide depending on how you feel.”

The Uruguayan feels the incident could force managers to rethink their penalty strategy in order to avoid discontent amongst the squad.

“I’m 100% sure, I promise you that from today the coaches are going to go back 50 years ago and they want to say, okay, this is over, you are my penalty taker, you are my second.

“I think that yesterday will clarify the situation for the whole world of football from now on because nobody wants to see that again for sure.

“I cannot believe that Chelsea, won 6-0, Cole Palmer scored four, is on fire, is a candidate for player of the year and we’re talking about the penalty, that shows you how bad it was, and it shouldn’t be repeated” ,Poyet added.”
