Chelsea selling their two best performers for £60m would be a catastrophic mistake

There were plenty of top players on display for Chelsea last night. Who were the two best performers? Well, if you had to pick two, you’d probably go for Trevoh Chalobah and Conor Gallagher.

The latter was absolutely everywhere, especially in the first half an hour, where it was vital for Chelsea to get off to a bright start. He brought the energy we desperately needed, got Spurs on the back foot, and we never looked back.

There was a moment in the second half where he chased from goalkeeper to full back, back to goalkeeper. Single handedly pressing their whole defence. It got a massive roar from the crowd, and injected another wave of belief just as we were flagging.

Gallagher was also the man who swung in the free kick for Chalobah to score. But the defender’s performance was about far more than just a goal. He was a rock in defence, and once again carried the entire structure of the backline.

He’s only been back since the turn of the year, but there’s no question he’s been our best defender of the season. Just imagine if he had been fit since August.

Mauricio Pochettino agreed: “Trevoh Chalobah and Conor Gallagher were fantastic,” he said after full time.

“Players that grew in this club, come through the academy system, they have the capacity in this type of game to give a little bit more because it’s emotional.”

The absurd situation with sales

Now we’ve written this countless times before, but this can’t be made clear enough, and tonight makes it clearer than ever: the idea that selling these two is a good idea is just absurd.

They’re not just beloved fan favourites from the academy – they’re our best performers of the year in midfield and defence. There is no way around it, if you sell these guys you’re weakening the team as well as destroying your relationship with the fans. Mauricio Pochettino clearly loves them both too.

For the sake of something like £60m in total, you’d be causing a catastrophe on and off the pitch.
