Middlesbrough have had a slow start to the 2022/23 campaign.

Tipped to be a top six side before a ball was kicked, after ten matches, Chris Wilder’s side sit 22nd in the Championship standings having won just two league matches.

To add further fire to the situation, in recent weeks, Wilder has been linked with the managerial vacancy at Premier League side AFC Bournemouth.

Those links have intensified of late, with the Daily Mail reporting last night that Wilder is a leading candidate for the Cherries job.

With that report in mind, we asked FLW’s Middlesbrough fan pundit Dana Malt whether or not she was concerned about Wilder being linked with another club.

“In truth, I don’t care anymore.” Dana explained to FLW.

“It’s already gotten quite boring to see the anxiety around Chris Wilder and if he’s interested in a job elsewhere.

“Whether that anxiety is understandable or not, it’s clear that this has caused problems within the fan base because I think a lot of Boro supporters have lost trust in Wilder and that started at the back end of last season when he was linked with the Burnley job and he refused to squash those rumours.

“So, this feels a little bit like deja-vu.

“With that in mind and with how tiring this is, if he was to leave for Bournemouth or if he was to leave Boro for any other club, I don’t think my emotions would be angling towards sad or upset.

“I was quite all in on Chris Wilder’s project at Middlesbrough, but if there’s tensions behind the scenes as many reporters have suggested then maybe key figures behind this project aren’t all in themselves.

“So, it’s a shame that we’re having these anxieties, but, at the end of the day, something has to change because I think the fan base is sort of losing their attachment to Wilder.”

The Verdict

It seems there is more going on than meets the eye at Middlesbrough at the moment.

As our fan pundit points out, reports of things happening behind the scenes are a concern, and that’s perhaps why links have continued to be made with the Cherries job despite recent comments by the Boro boss.

Indeed, claims have even been made by TalkSPORT’s Alex Crook today suggesting it is Wilder’s camp pushing for that job.

With that in mind, and potential fall outs behind the scenes, the future is not exactly looking brilliant for Boro and their boss.

It’s certainly a far from ideal situation, and with little clarity on the matter just yet, we are left to speculate about what the future might hold.
