Keshi Anderson faces an uncertain future with Birmingham City, as the versatile midfielder's contract is up in the summer.

The 29-year-old has failed to nail down a spot in the first-team this season, and is unlikely to want to remain at a club where he is not playing regular football.

While his deal is up in the summer, the club do have an option for another year. They can activate his contract for another season and try to sell him in the summer, but as it stands, he will be a free agent.

John Eustace was in charge at the start of the season, as the Blues had one of the busiest transfer windows of any club in the second tier, bringing Anderson in from Blackpool on a free transfer.

He was sacked after the club was taken over, despite being in sixth place at the time, and was replaced by Wayne Rooney, after a fairly positive start from Anderson at St. Andrew's.

However, the England legend was sacked after winning just two out of his 15 games in charge, meaning former Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray then took over, coming in to steady the ship after a heavy decline towards the bottom of the table under Rooney.

However, his health concerns have lead to former Blues boss Gary Rowett taking interim charge in the dugout, which has seen a change in Anderson's fortunes. He fell out of favour after missing three months with a hamstring issue, but has played in the last four games, including starting against Coventry City in the 3-0 win on Saturday.

Speaking via the Birmingham Mail, Anderson commented on his recent games under Rowett following Birmingham's huge victory over Coventry. He said: "The manager puts a lot of faith and trust in the boys and made a few changes to the team.

"It was just about going out and doing the job that needed to be done, working hard, running for each other, communicating and having the fight and belief that we could turn up and get a result."

Anderson was then asked to reflect on his personal campaign. He said: "I don’t know, to be honest. It’s one of those things. We had a change of managers, preference. It’s football.

"I had a similar thing last year (at Blackpool) as well. It can happen and it’s something, as footballers, you have to get on with.

"Managers pick teams that they imagine will win games. We’re in an industry where not everyone can play so it’s just one of those things.

"I made a few sub appearances from January through till March, then I plucked up a little niggle through March and, obviously, Gary has come in and decided to change things. It’s just how the game goes really."

Fan reaction to Keshi Anderson's future

Football League World's Birmingham City fan pundit, Mike Gibbs, believes that stability is the key to understanding Anderson's role with the club next season, irrespective of which division they may be playing in.

He said: "I think Keshi Anderson has had such an up and down season.

"Injuries have caused that, but also the change in management as well. He's kind of gone from being real flavour of the month to not even in the squad, let alone the starting 11.

"He's had a really topsy-turvy time of it after being brilliant under Eustace. "He was almost one of the first names on the teamsheet for a while. He got injured and then struggled to get back into the team. "Under Rooney and Mowbray, he didn't seem to be in the picture, and even when Mowbray came in, he didn't necessarily seem to be in his plans during those eight games. "Anderson's got back into the squad under Rowett, he's come off the bench and done well in previous games. "He obviously played on Saturday and did a great job. I kind of think if he is fit, part of the plans, then we should look to take up the option in his contract. "I really do, and, to be honest, if we were to get relegated, then he'd be fantastic in League One as well. "I think the challenging thing is that we need a bit of stability in the manager, and knowing what exactly is the style of play that the manager is going to introduce.

"That should be Mowbray when he's hopefully fit and well come the summer, so it will be interesting to see how it plays out."
