Chelsea defender Kadeisha Buchanan says that she made the perfect choice in joining the club over the summer.

The 26-year-old Canadian international joined The Blues from French club Lyon where she won 13 trophies including five European titles.

Buchanan spoke to the media last week including FAWSL Full-Time and she said that joining Chelsea was the perfect choice for her after being impressed by The Blues over a significant period of time.

“I think for a long time, I had been watching them and noticing them,” Buchanan said. “When we (Lyon) played them in the semi-finals of the Champions League, they were very impressive and one of the tougher teams that we had faced all season. I really admired the way they played so from then on, I continued watching them.

“It was the right decision at the right point in my life. Chelsea was where I wanted to go and so far so good, I made the perfect choice.”

The UEFA Women’s Champions League is the one trophy that has escaped Chelsea’s grasp in recent years. As a five-time winner of the competition, Buchanan says that a lot of the qualities needed to become European champions are already at the club.

She said “When I see them play and when they’re at their best, I think they’re the best team. It’s just about getting that consistency day in, day out. I really admire the way they play, I’d admire the club and with Jessie (Fleming) being here, it is kind of like an easy solution – I have a teammate here, a friend here, to help me get by.

“I think the girls here are amazing and I think that’s important. That bond off the field can definitely translate on the field easily. If all those things come together, you create a championship team – they’re already a championship team because they’ve won all the accolades in this league. It’s just when you get to the Champions League, you can obviously do better.”

Buchanan will hope to make her second appearance for new club Chelsea when they face Manchester City at Kingsmeadow tomorrow afternoon.
