In an interview with L’Équipe, Tottenham loanee Pierre-Emile Højberg (29) discussed the characteristics that make him a natural leader and how it felt to captain Olympique de Marseille despite only being at the club for a brief period.

The former Bayern Munich midfielder is a relatively new figure at the Stade Vélodrome, but this has not stopped Roberto De Zerbi from entrusting him with a leadership role in the dressing room at Les Olympiens. Højberg was handed the armband by the former Brighton manager for OM’s 3-1 victory against Toulouse in August.

Marseille signed the Danish international on loan with an option to buy from Tottenham Hotspur. Højberg has been a key figure since he arrived at Les Phocéens, making 10 appearances so far this season and scoring one goal. The 29-year-old is no stranger to the armband as his country’s captain. He also captained Southampton during his time with the Premier League club.

Commenting on being named OM captain, the midfielder said, “The coach came to see me very early in the week, telling me that I was going to be captain for this match. He told me simple things. You know, sometimes, you shouldn’t complicate the situation. I know the value of wearing this armband. But, once again, it’s not going to change me.”
