Olympique de Marseille made a huge stride towards securing their place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League, beating Villarreal 4-0 at the Vélodrome on Thursday, however, interim manager Jean-Louis Gasset struck a cautious tone post-match.

The build-up to the match was dominated by talk of Marcelino’s return to the belly of the beast. The Spaniard left Marseille in highly acrimonious circumstances earlier in the season, and he had the chance to exact revenge on Thursday night. However, his side were not at the races. OM carry a 4-0 lead into the second leg and therefore have one foot in the quarter-finals, however, Gasset isn’t getting ahead of himself.

“We have already seen turnarounds,” began the Frenchman, who as Montpellier manager back in 1998, saw his side lose against Marseille, having led 4-0. “There is a second leg to manage. I am well placed to know that sometimes, 4-0 isn’t enough. We’re keeping our feet on the ground,” he added in his post-match press conference.

Since replacing Gennaro Gattuso in mid-February, Gasset has overseen a transformation of Les Phocéens. He has won each of his first four games in charge, scoring 16 goals in the process.
