Liverpool out-on-loan defender Nathaniel Phillips has admitted that he had to wait patiently for his opportunity at Derby County, but is keen on clocking more minutes.

Arne Slot deemed Phillips surplus to his requirements in the Liverpool squad and approved his season-long loan deal to Derby in the summer window.

Rams boss Paul Warne gave Phillips starts in back-to-back games last week and he played for the first time for 90 minutes this season during their draw against Plymouth Argyle at the weekend.

The Liverpool defender admitted that he has had to wait patiently for his opportunity because Derby’s defence has been excellent since his arrival and pointed out that it was a hard task to get in the starting line-up.

Phillips added that he is happy to be able to start games and the Reds loanee is determined to help the club achieve their goals.

When asked whether he is pleased to start back-to-back games, Phillips told Rams TV: “Yes, certainly.

“I have had to be patient since coming in.

“Obviously the defence has been performing well since I have come in, so it has been difficult to get into the team, but you just have to remain patient and ready for those opportunities when they come.

“It has been really nice to get some minutes and try and contribute to the team and what the club are trying to do and hopefully that can continue.”

Phillips has made a total of ten appearances for Derby this season and his goal will be to seal a permanent spot in the starting line-up under Warne.
