A Kylian Mbappé (25) inspired rout leaves Montpellier HSC only a point away from the relegation zone. Montpellier find themselves in a rare relegation battle after picking up only 12 points since the start of December, and the club even slipped into the relegation playoff spot for the first time since the 6th of February 2016.

A surprise victory over OGC Nice gave Montpellier some breathing room at the bottom before a return to reality came crashing over them as the Mbappé farewell tour came to town.

Paris Saint-Germain entered the game having drawn their previous three Ligue 1 fixtures. However, it was a stylish return to their winning ways as the Frenchman recorded an impressive hattrick in a 6-2 victory over a spirited Montpellier side.

‘Mbappé’s not here anymore, he’s not here anymore, it doesn’t matter.’

Not everyone was so impressed by the feats of Mbappé. Asked about what will likely be the last time that Montpellier has to face the forward for the foreseeable future, manager Michel Der Zakarian was blunt, “I don’t give a damn.”

“He’s not here anymore, he’s not here anymore, it doesn’t matter.” Der Zakarian continued, “He scored three goals against us, we let him shoot twice and we know that, when we give him time, he has the talent… He can put [the ball] where he needs to.”

Despite the eventual result, the manager was initially pleased with how Montpellier reacted to going 2-0 down in the first half as they battled back to a level score by half-time. “We created a lot of situations, we scored two goals even if one of them was from the penalty spot. I think the goalkeeper should have been sent off for the penalty. But hey, the referee said no.”
