A lot is said about some players in the Barcelona dressing room who earn big wages with a minimal contribution on the field. However, it seems to be a common intention for many football stars to eye a club purely for monetary benefits.

Former Barcelona midfielder Alex Song recently spoke with Toronto Raptors Basketball star Pascal Siakam on an Instagram interaction. During the conversation, the Cameroonian football player made some shocking statements about his transfer to Catalonia.

Song explicitly said that his move to Catalonia was purely motivated because of the financial guarantee and not the sporting prospect of joining forces with the likes of the Golden Generation.

“When Barcelona offered me a contract, and I saw how much I would earn, I didn’t even think twice. I felt my wife and children should have comfortable lives once my career is over.”

“I met Barcelona’s sporting director, and he told me I would not get to play many games, but I did not give a f*** – I knew that now I would become a millionaire.”

He then added that because of his bumped up salary, he looked forward to shopping and having parties.

“I wanted to rub shoulders with the big boys. I could shop whenever I wanted and have crazy nights out.”

Song also talked about his love for the legendary Thierry Henry and the striker’s car. He said, “I would go to training and see Thierry Henry – the King – turn up in an absolute gem of a car. I told myself I wanted the same car at all costs.

“I went to the dealership, signed the papers and arranged to pay for it by standing order – and just like that I had the same car as The King.

“But I swear that I had to hand the car back inside two months. All my money was going on filling it with petrol.

“I told them, ‘Give me a Toyota – this car’s too much for me.'”

After eight years at Arsenal, Song joined Barcelona in 2012 on a 5-year contract. The Catalans paid £15 million for his transfer. However, he departed Camp Nou two seasons and 39 appearances later to join West Ham on a two-year loan before eventually transferring to Rubin Kazan.

In two years, his only Barcelona highlight is mistaking that Carles Puyol was handing him the La Liga title during the celebrations.

The midfielder currently plays for AS Arta Solar 7 in the Djibouti League. Unsurprisingly, he left his previous side Sion in 2020 because of his unwillingness to take a pay-cut amidst the COVID pandemic.
