Frenkie de Jong linked with Tottenham

On Wednesday afternoon, reports emerged out of Spain claiming we had made a whopping £51m approach to Barcelona for their 26-year-old.

It had been suggested Daniel Levy was willing to match De Jong’s current salary at the Nou Camp dependant on targets being met.

However, speaking to Caught Offside, Romano has played down the reports of any approach from Hotspur Way: “There have been lots of rumours about Frenkie de Jong lately guys, but I can tell you that Barcelona will try to extend his contract in the next months,” the transfer insider said.

“They still believe in Frenkie and there’s no news on the player side so far regarding wanting to leave the club.”

“Of course, if both sides can’t agree on a new deal, the situation in the summer could change.

“I’m not hearing anything on decisions made or negotiations ongoing, and I’m not aware of any Tottenham bids so far, despite the stories.”

Frenkie de Jong salary

It has been claimed the Dutchman is on some seriously high wages over in Spain with Capology reporting – bonuses included – of earnings around £938k-per-week.

Obviously, this is well outside of what Spurs would ever be willing to pay for any player given our current top earner is said to be Heung-min Son on a reported £190k-per-week.

So any prospect of Spurs paying a player in the region of what De Jong is currently on feels like a wild dream.

And even if Barca are able to negotiate a reduced salary with the 26-year-old ahead of the summer, is it going to be a realistic wage that Spurs would be willing to pay?

It feels like Ange Postecoglou has built a tight knit squad at Hotspur Way and it does feel unlikely that the Australian may then want one player arrive at the club who is on astronomical wages.

And after all, this is a player who some may argue Moussa Sissoko got the better of in the Champions League all those years ago.
