Carlton Palmer believes Wrexham’s Hollywood owners will continue to support Phil Parkinson in the transfer market as they prepare for life in League One.

Wrexham’s rise under Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds

It has been a dream few years for the Red Dragons since they were bought by Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, even if it took them longer than expected to get out of the National League.

However, they are continuing on their march up the pyramid, as promotion to the third tier of English football was confirmed thanks to a 6-0 hammering of Forest Green on Saturday.

Carlton Palmer expects more big Wrexham signings

Whilst it’s been a fairytale story for Wrexham, rival fans are quick to point out that they have been heavily bankrolled by the owners, and there’s no denying that they have spent big sums.

They managed to attract the likes of Ben Tozer, Elliott Lee and Paul Mullin, among others, as a non-league side, and they’ve continued to add quality this season, with James McClean a high-profile arrival.

Of course, the higher up the leagues they go, the more finances are required to ensure the club is competitive, so it will be interesting to see how far the club can go.

However, speaking to FLW, ex-England international Palmer explained that there’s still more to come from the Welsh side, as he stressed the need for more new recruits if they are to ever reach the Championship.

Two successive promotions for Wrexham and Phil Parkinson. It’s unbelievable, the meteoric rise of the football club, and they want to keep pushing on, to do great things for Wrexham.

They’ve put the club back on the map, and I expect them to kick-on again, I really do. I think they’ll back Parkinson again in terms of bringing in new players. He has brought in players who can play at a higher level in the past.

That’s what they’ve done in the past, and that’s what you’ve got to do. When you want to jump leagues, you’ve got to get players who can play at a higher level, which is what has happened at Wrexham.

I believe he will be backed again in the summer. Obviously, League One is a different ball game in terms of quality. In the lower leagues, you can sometimes get away with it, but at this level, you can’t.

They need players with quality, and, to do that, you’re going to have to spend money.

But, it’s alright having the money, you’ve still got to go out there and win promotion, which they have done under Parkinson.

So, I expect him to be backed again and it will be interesting to see whether Wrexham can have the same effect in League One as they have this season. As you step up, the quality improves, but it’s absolutely fantastic for Wrexham, and I’m looking forward to seeing how they do in League One.”

Parkinson’s side still have two games to go this season, starting with a trip to Crewe this weekend.
