Switzerland, however, failed to win the remaining two games in their first round of qualifying matches as they slipped to 2-2 draws against Romania and Kosovo, failing to protect their lead and conceding stoppage time equalizers in both matches.

Switzerland got their qualifying campaign back on track in their second round of qualifying matches when they registered another victory over Andorra, coming out of the tie as comfortable 3-0 winners. After a goalless first half, Switzerland turned on the heat in the second half as Granit Xhaka’s pass found Cedric Itten’s, whose right-footed effort found the back of the net in the 49th minute. Xhaka grabbed a goal of his own in the 84th minute, rifling his shot into the bottom left corner of the net from outside the box before Shaqiri’s stoppage-time penalty capped a good Swiss performance.

However, Switzerland seemed to lose their winning mojo as they failed to win any of their last four qualifying matches, recording 3 draws and one loss.
