Foden was recognised for an outstanding season in which he has 24 goals and 10 assists in 48 games for City, and received 42 per cent of the votes from football journalists and FWA members.

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice and Foden’s City team-mate Rodri came second and third respectively. Martin Odegaard, Ollie Watkins and Cole Palmer made up the rest of the top six.

In the women’s category, Shaw had been in electric form until suffering a broken foot last week. She leads the WSL scoring charts with 21 goals for a City side closing in on the WSL title. She and second-place Lauren James claimed 80 per cent of the vote between them, while Alex Greenwood came third.

Foden said: “Being named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year is a huge honour. I’m very, very happy to receive this award but I could not have done it without the help of my team-mates. We have a special squad and I’m privileged to be a part of it.”

“I am focused on finishing the season as strongly as possible and to try to help City win more trophies.”

Shaw said: “To be recognised in this way is a special honour.

“I also owe such a lot to Gareth [Taylor], the rest of the coaching team and everyone else here at City. Many thanks to all who voted for.”

The winners will receive their trophies at the Footballer of the Year dinner in London on May 16.
