Hull City have made the surprising decision to sack Liam Rosenior after they missed out on a top six finish in the Championship.

Hull City sack Liam Rosenior

The 39-year-old was named as Tigers boss in 2022, and he initially did well in taking the club away from relegation trouble, and he changed the style of play as he focused on a possession based approach.

Rosenior was backed in the summer ahead of his first full season in charge, and there was an expectation that Hull could push for promotion.

Those hopes increased after a very productive January window as well, with Fabio Carvalho, Anass Zaroury and Ryan Giles among the arrivals.

Yet, the Tigers couldn’t find the consistency to reach the play-offs, with their final day defeat at Plymouth, meaning they just fell short.

And, it appears that has convinced owner Acun Ilicali to make a change, as TalkSPORT reporter Alex Crook revealed that Rosenior has been sacked.

Hull City owner will face scrutiny

It’s fair to say that this is a decision which will have shocked Hull fans, and it’s easy to see why, as Rosenior had done a very good job with the team.

This is a ridiculously competitive Championship, as shown by the points total that the top three have picked up, and it’s worth noting that Hull’s 70 points this season would’ve been enough for them to make the play-offs in the previous campaign.

As well as that, Rosenior changed the culture at Hull. After a chaotic period, there finally seemed to be some stability, with the former player having developed a style of play that was attractive to watch.

It’s something that the fans appreciated as well, evident by the increased attendances at home, and the reaction to his dismissal.

The owner will rightly point out that he has made some major signings, and he does deserve credit for the money he has put into the club.

However, whilst January was impressive on paper, they perhaps lacked the proven number nine that should’ve been a priority.

Noah Ohio and Billy Sharp are two players at different stages of their careers, but neither were capable of being prolific, with the injury to Liam Delap proving to be significant. So, that is another reason for giving Rosenior more time.

A minority may feel Rosenior should’ve been able to get more out of the current squad, and that by finishing 7th, he did fail to achieve the objective set. But, it did seem like it was a long-term project at Hull, and they undoubtedly improved under his guidance.

Now, there will be a lot of pressure on the next head coach to build on the good work that Rosenior has done, and Ilicali’s ruthless streak here shows that promotion is going to be the only aim.

There’s no rush to get the new boss in, and the timing is good in the sense that a new head coach will be in for pre-season, and they will also have time to assess the squad ahead of the transfer window, where work needs to be done as several loan stars return to their parent clubs.

So, it will be interesting to see how it plays out, but there’s no doubt that Ilicali has taken a massive risk with this bold call.
