Manchester City director of football Hugo Viana has issued an interesting update on the remainder of the club’s summer transfer window.
Since his arrival earlier this summer, Viana has stepped into one of the most high-profile executive positions in world football, with Manchester City’s transfer market dealings under constant scrutiny.
Replacing Txiki Begiristain, who stepped down after over a decade of building the club’s modern dynasty, the former Sporting CP director has quickly had to adapt to life at the Etihad Stadium, with his presence already felt during one of the busiest windows of the Guardiola era.
Manchester City’s summer has been dominated by ongoing questions surrounding key players, with Ederson, Manuel Akanji, and Savinho all facing uncertain futures until the very last week of the summer market.
At the same time, the club has strengthened its ranks with the likes of Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders, while also integrating younger prospects into Pep Guardiola’s wider plans. With just days left in the window, supporters remain eager to see whether more movement will take place, either through surprise signings or high-profile departures.
Manchester City’s approach has been one of careful consideration, while their work across the City Football Group also plays a role with players often expected to be moved out on loan to clubs like Girona or Palermo to gain first-team experience.
Quizzed by broadcasters in the immediate aftermath of the UEFA Champions League’s league phase draw, Hugo Viana was asked whether he personally expects much more business in the final days of the summer transfer window – either in the way of arrivals or departures.
“*Laughs* We are working, okay!” the Portuguese official responded.
Offering further insight, Viana was also asked how he felt about his start to life at the Etihad Stadium, to which he said, “It has been a pleasure, a learning, a lot of learning moments for me.”
Viana continued, “Of course, I am very excited to be in the Premier League also with this huge, huge Club and to have this first Champions League experience with Manchester City, it is always a pleasure.”
The question now turns to how City will close their window. With Ederson’s future unresolved amid interest from Galatasaray, and Manuel Akanji attracting interest from England, Italy, and Germany, the final stretch could yet see twists.
Pep Guardiola has been open in the past about only wanting players fully committed to his project, and that principle could dictate any late exits, while the Catalan has also been keen to stress the importance of a more trim squad roster.
On the arrivals side, Manchester City have been linked with further defensive reinforcements, particularly at right-back, where Matheus Nunes and Rico Lewis have often deputised. Should the right opportunity arise, Viana may yet act to strengthen Guardiola’s options.
Even if no major signings are completed, his words suggest the club remains alert and prepared to act quickly should circumstances change.
