Kamara spent last season on loan at Fratton Park, where he cemented himself as a key part of John Mousinho’s first team squad as they clinched promotion to the Championship.

The winger contributed eight goals and 10 assists from 46 appearances in League One, earning a lot of plaudits for his performances (all stats from Fbref).

However, he has since returned to his parent club following the end of the campaign, raising questions over a potential return to Pompey for life in the second division.

New Canaries boss Johannes Hoff Thorup is likely to give the player an opportunity to impress in pre-season, but Mousinho has claimed that the south coast club will be ready to pounce should an exit become likely.

Anderton believes that the return of Kamara would be huge for Portsmouth if they can pull it off this summer.

The 52-year-old has claimed that it would bring a confidence boost to the rest of the squad if he was to come back to Fratton Park for next season.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, via William Hill, he said: “Yes indeed.

“You have to look to have the best squad you can and Kamara being part of it will be huge for the players.

“He has done so well and it will be great if they manage to do this as it will give so much confidence to the squad as they start the Championship season.

“Same as [Colby] Bishop, the confidence it brings to others retaining your good players is huge.”

Kamara contributed the third most amount of goals and assists in League One for Portsmouth last season, with a total of 18.

Colby Bishop and Paddy Lane provided 24 and 19 respectively, as Pompey earned 97 points on their way to the League One title.

Portsmouth’s summer transfer plans

While the club waits on any potential move for Kamara, they have already completed two transfers since gaining promotion.

Barnsley’s Jordan Williams has arrived as a free agent ahead of the team returning for pre-season in the coming weeks.

Oxford United’s Josh Murphy was confirmed as their second arrival earlier this week, also signing as a free transfer.

Pompey will have until 30 August to complete any further deals, with the Hampshire outfit eyeing survival in the Championship beyond one campaign.

Kamara signing would be big for Portsmouth

If Portsmouth can secure a move to keep Kamara, if even just on another loan deal, then that would be great business.

It remains to be seen whether Hoff Thorup is going to use him as part of his first team plans at Norwich, with pre-season likely to play a big role in that decision.

The forward showed he is ready to take the step up into the Championship, but might not be quite capable of breaking into the Norfolk outfit’s squad just yet.

A loan move back to Fratton Park might be the best move for the time being, although that may yet also depend on the future of Jonathan Rowe.
