Both players were replaced in Monday's agonising 3-2 defeat to Liverpool at St. James' Park, prompting fears the pair could be set for an extended spell on the sidelines.

But head coach Howe delivered some "relatively good news" at his pre-match media briefing on Friday morning, insisting that while Joelinton will miss the trip to Yorkshire, Tonali had a chance of featuring against the newly-promoted side.

There was an encouraging update on defender Fabian Schär, too, who was also withdrawn against the Reds earlier in the week.

But Howe also warned that his side would need to "use the emotion" they're likely to feel at a lively Elland Road if they're to record their first win of the campaign against Daniel Farke's men.

Here are some of the key talking points from Howe's meeting with the media:

On United's team news ahead of the weekend...

"Relatively good news on both players (Joelinton and Tonali). When they left the pitch, we feared they may be out long-term. Joey’s scan was good but he will miss this weekend - we'll hopefully get him back for the game after the international break.

"Sandro's injury isn’t serious. He is battling to be fit for tomorrow.

"Fabian Schär is available. We followed concussion protocols - he will be fine to play."

On Farke's Leeds...

"Every time we have been to Elland Road, we have experienced the atmosphere their fans try to create. The start of the game is going to be very important for us. They have invested in a lot of good players.

"I love going to Elland Road - it is a stadium full of emotion, and we'll need to use that emotion this weekend."

"Really interesting. Some great games, exciting prospects. Very competitive matches - what an opportunity to enjoy more games in the Champions League.

"It will be tough and challenging, but we look forward to it.

"Barcelona at home is an amazing fixture for us. You get instantly drawn to that with the links with Sir Bobby Robson and the history of the club."

On forward Will Osula...

"I thought Will did really well when he came on on Monday night, he gave us renewed energy, he has improved a lot from this time last year.

"He has gained the knowledge and experience of how we play, he is gaining in confidence and that goal will do him the world of good."
