Michael O’Neill’s Nations League promotion winners have three friendlies to come before beginning World Cup qualifying

Northern Ireland face Switzerland in an international friendly in Belfast tonight.

Michael O’Neill’s side return to action at Windsor Park on Friday evening in confident mood having successfully secured promotion to League B of the Nations League back in November despite squandering a two-goal advantage in their final match out in Luxembourg.

They ended up finishing two points ahead of Bulgaria, who now face a nervy two-legged play-off tie against the Republic of Ireland.

Northern Ireland are now four matches unbeaten since their narrow loss in Plovdiv last summer, though have no competitive football at all to come in the first half of 2025 with no involvement in those Nations League play-offs and having been drawn in a four-team qualifying group for the 2026 World Cup alongside Slovakia, Luxembourg and the winners of the high-profile Nations League quarter-final showdown between Germany and Italy.

Instead it’s a trio of friendlies ahead of that first qualifier back in Luxembourg in September, with Switzerland’s visit to Belfast followed by a trip to Sweden on Tuesday night and home meeting with Iceland in June.

The Swiss were relegated to League B of the Nations League after finishing bottom of a group containing Spain, Denmark and Serbia, while they were also drawn into a four-team World Cup qualifying group along with Sweden, Slovenia and Kosovo.

They lost all but two games in the Nations League and are now winless in their last seven outings dating back to Euro 2024 last summer, where they drew with Germany, dumped out Italy and made the quarter-finals before losing to England on penalties.

TV channel: Northern Ireland vs Switzerland is being shown live and free-to-air on BBC Two in Northern Ireland, with coverage beginning at 7pm GMT ahead of a 7:45pm kick-off at Windsor Park.
