Jose Mourinho is without a doubt one of the greatest managers of all time and he is also the master of negotiating huge payouts when he is dismissed.

Throughout his illustrious managerial career, Mourinho has managed over 1000 football matches and won 26 trophies in that time including eight league titles and two UEFA Champions League trophies.

The Portuguese manager will go down in history as an all-time great but he often doesn’t stick with the same club for all too long.

And now, he finds himself under pressure at Roma. The third-season curse could be about to bite the Portuguese boss once again as his side currently sit 16th in the table, having only won one of their first six matches.

His current contract in Italy runs until the end of the season and so Roma probably won’t have to pay as much to sack him as some of his previous employers have.

Chelsea (2007)

Mourinho’s first stint at Chelsea had absolutely everything. Viewed at the time as the cocky new manager on the scene, Mourinho quickly proved that the hype he brought along with him was warranted.

Chelsea won back-to-back league titles under the self-proclaimed Special One as he took England by storm. Mourinho then unexpectedly left Chelsea in his third season with the club following a slow start to the season.

Upon leaving the club the manager agreed on a compensation package of around £18million following 185 matches in charge.

Real Madrid (2012)

After Mourinho had achieved the impossible of winning the treble with Inter Milan in 2009-10, the pull of Real Madrid was too large for Mourinho to turn down.

Mourinho might have only won three trophies during his three-year stay in Madrid, but that was largely due to the fact he was up against the greatest Barcelona side of all time.

His Real Madrid side set a record when they won the 2011-12 league title as they became the first-ever side to break 100 points in La Liga whilst also breaking the all-time scoring record with 121 goals.

Mourinho left the club at the end of his third season with his side finishing second in La Liga and out of the Champions League in the semi-finals. He received a reported £17million as part of his compensation package.

Chelsea (2015)

Mourinho’s second stint at Stamford Bridge was equally as chaotic as his first. He won the Premier League during his second season back with the club before things went pear-shaped for him again in his third year.

With Chelsea sat 16th in the table in December they took the decision to part ways with Mourinho for the second time. This time they paid out a reported £12.5million to get rid of him.

Manchester United (2019)

Everyone laughed at Mourinho when he claimed finishing second with Man United was one of his greatest-ever achievements, but it turns out he was actually on to something.

His tenure at Old Trafford was less spectacular than his previous jobs, but he did manage to win three trophies during his first season with the club.

In classic Mourinho fashion, the club decided enough was enough during his third season with the club. United paid out around £15million to get rid of him back in December 2019.

Spurs (2021)

Mourinho’s arrival at Spurs in 2019 came as a shock to us all, even more shocking was the fact that they sacked him right before the EFL Cup final.

The Portuguese manager was in charge of 86 games for Spurs before he was dismissed in April 2021. His compensation package came in at a whopping £16million meaning that he has cashed in around £80million throughout his managerial career exclusively through clubs getting rid of him. That’s not bad going.
