Middlesbrough are set to be backed by a big away following when they taken on Rangers at Ibrox in a pre-season friendly next month.
Middlesbrough have confirmed they have sold over 4,000 tickets for their away friendly at Rangers within just four hours.
It was announced at the end of May that Boro would be making the trip north of the border to take on the Glasgow outfit on July 26 as part of their preparations for the new Championship season.
The fixture will provide a real test for Boro, who are expected to appoint Rob Edwards as their new manager following Michael Carrick’s sacking.
Given Rangers’ history and stature, this was always a fixture that was going to appeal to the Boro support, and that has been reflected in the ticket sales.
The Teesside outfit had been given an allocation of just over 8,000 for the game at Ibrox, and Boro confirmed on social media that they had sold over 4,000 just four hours after the tickets had gone on sale on Wednesday.
So, there will be huge backing for the Championship side, and with the game still over a month away, it would be no surprise if the away allocation was snapped up, with tickets costing £20 for adults.
As we know, pre-season is all about building up for the Championship opener, so the result doesn’t matter.
But, this is exactly the sort of test that Boro need, and it promises to be a great occasion for the players.
Whilst we don’t know how Rangers’ sales are going, they are a big club, and there’s every chance this could be the biggest attendance that the Boro players play in front of this season.
Obviously, it won’t have the same edge as a proper game, but that will bring an atmosphere, and the away end will be bouncing when you consider how many Boro are taking. So, it promises to be a good day out, and Russell Martin’s side will be a major threat with the way they play.
It’s worth noting that this game is sandwiched between two Champions League qualifiers against Panathinaikos for Rangers, so Martin is likely to rotate the squad. However, it does mean they are likely to be ahead of Boro in terms of fitness.
