How Manchester United can turn things around to avoid another trophyless season | OneFootball

Manchester United enjoyed a glorious moment under Sir Alex Ferguson, winning 13 PL titles, one treble, and two UEFA Champions League titles. They were one of the top names for Champions League odds. However, since his retirement from coaching, Manchester United has since fallen down the graces.

The team now scrambles to find itself in major debates for the best, and the fans just hang on to the past. Since Ferguson’s retirement, the team has only won the FA Cup, Community Shield, and Europa League titles. And given its pedigree, this is below the standard. Therefore, they continue to go through managers like hot dinners. The team has had five managers, including Ten Hag, who will take charge of the team from next season.

In addition to the five managers, they’ve had three interim coaches take charge. But they’ve not been able to show any glimpse of domination in the last 10 years. The last time the team won a title was in 2016, with Jose Mourinho as head coach. The team did the double that year, winning the UEL and FA Cup. Additionally, they won the Community shield that same year.

Since then, they haven’t won a single trophy. It’s been six years, and with this season over, they will be going into their seventh year without a trophy. So, how can the team turn things around so that they don’t miss out on winning another trophy? Keep reading to find out what we think.

New Coach, New System

With Erik ten Hag named the official manager for Manchester United next season, it will be an interesting one for the Red Devils because he is a serial winner with Ajax. He even got a young side as far as the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League at one point, beating Juventus and Real Madrid in the process.

The coach is popular for his possession-based, quick counter style of football that would fit many current United players. Undoubtedly, there will be a switch in the tactics from “gengen-pressing” and an all-out counter attacking football to a more possessive one. Therefore, the coach would need players that can use the ball on their feet.

We see Jadon Sancho, Fred, Ronaldo, and Bruno benefit from this playing system. Therefore, we look forward to seeing how the coach will implement it with other players or if we will be seeing an entirely new squad when the new season starts.

Out with the Old, In with the New

Most United fans and legends are still stuck in the old ways, and even though it was a glorious time for the club, there needs to be a change. Players should have proper orientation of the club’s structure, but they also need to get the freedom to express their talents to help the team.

In addition to that, we expect to see some of the old players move away from the Old Trafford next season. There has always been the need to clear out the wage bill to ensure that newer players can enter the fold. Therefore, we expect top signings such as the rumoured Frankie de Jong, a perfect replacement for Paul Pogba if he eventually moves.

In addition, players like Rashford, Martial, and Lingard need to either step up or find a new team as they’ve been poor for many seasons now. They still have some good years left in them, but some tough decisions have to be made if the team wants to reach greater heights.

The Youth System

The coach also needs to look at the academy for budding, hungry players that can come into the first team to do wonders. We all know how Erik cherishes young players. Therefore, it is good for youngsters in the youth system because we expect them to get their chance.

In addition to that, it can help fill in the loopholes left in the first team, and even though they do not have the experience yet, we may see them give more as they would be hungry to impress. So, we think the youth system will play a major role in helping the team get back to its glory days like the Class of ‘92.

Our Thoughts

Erik’s work is plenty for him once he becomes part of the team, but we believe he is up to the task. We don’t think Manchester United will win any major trophies next season, but there will be evidence of progress with them competing at a high level.

With Liverpool and Man City at an all-time high level, it will be tough to usurp the title, but it is possible.
