The EFL have issued a statement on Sheffield Wednesday and Dejphon Chansiri as the delay to the payment of wages at the club continues.
The EFL have confirmed that Sheffield Wednesday and owner Dejphon Chansiri have both been charged with a breach of the league's regulations for the late payment of player wages in March and May.
Wednesday first failed to pay the salaries of players and staff on time in March, with the club revealing that a cashflow issue was behind the delay on that occasion.
Speaking at the time, Chansiri revealed that the Owls were dangerously close to reaching the maximum 30-day permitted limit for the late payment of wages during a single year, which would have resulted in them being hit with a three-window transfer ban, but the issue was resolved just in time to avoid that eventuality.
However, it was revealed last week that Wednesday players and staff had not received their May wages on time, and despite being given assurances that the outstanding salaries were expected to be paid by Monday evening, some are still waiting to receive the money owed to them.
The latest off-field issues at Hillsborough come during what is an already turbulent time for the Owls, who finished 12th in the Championship last season, with ongoing uncertainty over the future of manager Danny Rohl and increasing calls for Chansiri to sell the club.
It was revealed on Monday that Chansiri had reached out to some of his business associates to raise the funds needed to pay the remaining wages, but as the delay continues, the EFL have now revealed that both Wednesday and Chansiri have been charged with a breach of regulations, and they have been given two weeks to respond.
"Sheffield Wednesday Football Club has been charged with multiple breaches of EFL Regulations relating to payment obligations," the EFL said in a statement on their official website.
"The owner of Sheffield Wednesday, Dejphon Chansiri, has also been charged with causing the Club to be in breach of EFL Regulations despite his commitment to fund the cash requirements of the Club.
"All charges relate to both the Ultimate Beneficial Owner and the Club failing to meet their obligations to pay players’ wages on time and in full in March and May 2025.
"The Club and Mr Chansiri have 14 days to respond to the charges."
In response to the statement, the Owls revealed that they "continue to seek a resolution regarding outstanding salaries" and that Chansiri "sincerely apologises to all players, coaches and staff affected and everyone connected with the club".
The Owls and Chansiri have now been charged, but amid the fear of a potentially lengthy transfer ban, as of Tuesday afternoon, the club have still not appeared on the EFL's Embargo Reporting Service, although the situation could change quickly.
While a statement from the EFL was only a matter of time, the decision to charge Wednesday and Chansiri with a breach of regulations is a worrying development for the club amid the ongoing wages delay.
It is not the first time that the Owls have been sanctioned by the EFL during Chansiri's reign after the club were hit with a 12-point deduction ahead of the 2020-21 season, which still resulted in relegation to League One despite later being reduced to six, and many will be fearful about the possible punishments that could be ahead this time.
After Chansiri reportedly turned down a second bid from a Florida-based consortium last week, many will question why he is rejecting offers for the club if he no longer has the funds required to run it properly, and Wednesday supporters will hope that the EFL's intervention will help convince him to sell.
