A group from across the pond have made a couple of attempts to buy the club.

Chris Waddle has urged the American consortium that is looking to buy Sheffield Wednesday to get a deal done quickly, although that will be easier said than done.

Two attempts from the States-based group have been rebuffed over the past couple of months, or so, with the first of those offers being termed as "derisory" by a Wednesday spokesperson.

Their efforts to become the owners of the Owls come amid serious financial problems at Hillsborough. Dejphon Chansiri, the Thai owner of the Championship outfit, has failed to pay people at the club on time on two of the last three paydays.

The first instance in April only affected the playing staff. The most recent one, which was revealed on Friday, has affected the coaches and the normal members of staff. As of this morning, Monday, 5th June, employees still haven't received their full May salaries.

Chris Waddle calls on American consortium to take quick Sheffield Wednesday action

Calls for Chansiri to sell the club have only got louder and louder in recent times. He and the club have been charged with breaches of financial regulations by the EFL.

Even though the American consortium, whose leader, John Flanagan, has confirmed is made up of business people, current and former professional athletes and present owners of other sports teams, have seemingly timed their attempts well, there appears to be quite a large gap between what they are willing to pay for Wednesday and what the current chairman would sell for.

Waddle, a former Wednesday player, has called on the group to act swiftly and complete their hopeful takeover, therefore saving the club from what could come next under its current leadership.

"I think Chansiri has had his time and it’s time for him to sell up and get out," said the 64-year-old via Examiner Live. "Someone else needs to have their turn and take the club forward. I have a lot of affection for Wednesday and it’s a crying shame that people aren’t getting their wages and to see them struggling. You imagine Danny Rohl isn’t coming back.

"They’re in a mess. The sooner this gets solved, the better. They need the new owners to come in and get on top of the situation. They need to pay the debts, pay the players, make new signings and kick on.

"This is a club that should really be in the Premier League, and instead it’s one of the last big clubs who haven’t been taken over," Waddle added. "I hope the Americans are the right people and get the deal done. It would be utterly heartbreaking if they go down again. Horrendous."

Sheffield Wednesday could be in serious trouble if Chansiri doesn't sell

We've seen before in English football how fast an institution like the Owls can plummet down the football pyramid and into relative, or even permanent, irrelevance.

Poor decision-making and leadership across a long timeframe are usually the main culprits for such crimes against football.

Without some major change, whether that be new owners or the current one getting his act together, there are no depths that Wednesday can't realistically reach.
