Shaun Williams was a crucial player for Millwall during his lengthy seven-and-a-half seasons with the Lions as he helped them to establish themselves back in the Championship.

Millwall brought Williams into the club in the January transfer window during the 2013/14 season from MK Dons as they aimed to move away from relegation danger in the Championship.

Williams did manage to do that with him scoring one goal in his 17 Championship appearances in the second half of the 2013/14 campaign to help the Lions secure a 19th place finish.

The following campaign saw Millwall suffer relegation from the Championship, but Williams himself did enjoy a decent enough season with him scoring twice in 38 league matches.

The midfielder was a very strong performer for Millwall in the next three seasons that the Lions spent in League One with him managing to score 11 league goals in those three campaigns. During that time he made at least 33 league appearances in each of those campaigns.

That saw him help Millwall earn promotion from League One during the 2017/18 season.

Williams managed to be a crucial player for the Lions as he made 31 and 32 Championship appearances in the 2018/19 and 2019/20 campaigns as the club established themselves back in the second tier.

Last term, Williams was more of a bit-part player for the Lions in the Championship with managing to make just 12 starts and 27 appearances in total.

Gary Rowett decided to allow Williams to leave the club in the summer at the end of his deal with the Lions.

That left the 35-year-old needing to try and find a new club to get more game time under his belt at this stage in his career.

Portsmouth decided to make a move for Williams and signed him on a free-transfer following his departure from Millwall.

The 35-year-old has proven to be a good signing for Danny Cowley’s side since his arrival and he has made 13 appearances in total in League One with 12 of those being starts.

Cowley has converted Williams into a third centre-back in a back three following Pompey suffering a number of injuries to some of their regular centre-backs.

However, Williams has been unable to help Portsmouth gain some form over the last few weeks in that role. That comes with Cowley’s side having only managed to claim one win in their last 11 games in the third tier.

Williams also played against Millwall for Portsmouth back in August in what was an early reunion with his old club in the League Cup.

The 35-year-old’s side were on the wrong end of the result on the night at The Den, but he took to his personal Twitter account after the game to express his thanks to the Lions supporters after the reception they gave him.

That game also happened to be his first appearance for Portsmouth, so that was the most memorable match he has featured in since leaving Millwall.
