Jack Rodwell was once a player who had the world at his feet and was tipped to go all the way to the top of the English game.

And for a period of time he did. The midfielder rose through the ranks at Everton and was quickly snapped up by Manchester City for a large fee either side of earning three England caps.

However after playing over 100 games for the Toffees, Rodwell’s fortunes would take a turn for the worst in Manchester as he went on to only feature 25 times for the Citizens, mainly due to injury and being out of favour in what was a star studded squad.

As a result of this, the Southport born player made the move to the North East with Sunderland, where he enjoyed mixed success with the Black Cats.

He played 76 games in red and white and was part of the squad who were relegated twice down to League One, with Rodwell being quickly made out to be one of the main villains of the piece.

His misery at the Stadium of Light was compounded in August 2018, when Chronicle Live labelled the midfielder as the worst signing in the club’s history.

It was therefore unsurprising to see Rodwell move on from his North East nightmare as he joined Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 2018 on a free transfer as he looked to rejuvenate his stuttering career.

However the same old injury problems resurfaced and the midfield player only went on to play 22 times at Ewood Park as he left in the summer of 2019 following the expiration.

A shock link to Italian giants Roma then followed before he eventually rocked up at Sheffield United in January of last year.

Just two appearances then followed for the Blades, with the club’s then manager Chris Wilder having to go to the lengths of defending the signing of the player following his appearance in the Sunderland Till I Die Netflix series.

Ultimately it turned out to be another unsuccessful spell for the 30-year-old and as a result he now finds himself as a free agent once again in what is a sorry state of affairs for a player who should be at the peak of his career right now.
