Playing the majority of his games in England’s second tier, Cook went on to play for Stockport County and Burnley, all before hanging up his boots at Accrington Stanley when the club were in the fifth tier of English football.

Cook’s first job as manager was with Merseyside club Southport, with the 55-year-old spending seven months in charge of the Sandgrounders before he was sacked.

Taking on a completely different challenge three months after going separate ways at Southport, Cook was appointed head coach at Sligo Rovers in April 2007.

Spending nearly five years with the Irish club, Cook enjoyed a rather productive time with Sligo before departing the club for one of the clubs he represented during his playing career, Accrington Stanley.
