FLW's Charlton Athletic has weighed in on the Addicks' move for Isaac Olaofe
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Charlton Athletic are closing in on signing Stockport County striker Isaac Olaofe.
According to Alan Nixon via Patreon, the Addicks are set to pay £1.5 million for the 25-year-old and are now discussing personal terms with the player.
The Hatters are reportedly "resigned" to losing the striker, who has netted 37 times in his three years at Edgeley Park, and he's now set to step up to the Championship, where he has just two appearances with Millwall earlier in his career to his name.
Football League World’s Charlon Athletic fan pundit, Sam White, has questioned the sizable amount of money manager Nathan Jones and the transfer team are set to spend on Olaofe, with parallels drawn to the deal to bring Ipswich Town's Gassan Ahadme to The Valley last summer.
“£1.5 million seems way too much money for someone that scores one goal every four games,” Sam told FLW.
“However, I think he's probably young enough and mouldable enough to be good.
“But working under Nathan Jones, playing for Charlton and coming with that kind of price tag means there's going to be a lot of pressure on him.
“That's what's happened with Gassan Ahadme and it just hasn't worked out. He hasn't lived up to the price tag or the pressure. So I don't know if Olaofe will do that, which will be a big problem, especially if Charlton are facing a relegation battle.
“You don't want to be having that pressure on you.
"Having said that, if anyone's going to do it, someone like Olaofe who's hungry for improvement, hungry to move up the leagues and has something about him, you'd imagine that he'd probably try and take it with both hands and would probably work quite well with Matty Godden.
“It’s probably not going to be £1.5 million up front, with some add-ons and stuff like that, which probably actually works out quite well, but I wouldn't want us to set our stall out on paying such big money for Olaofe when there's money needing to be spent in midfield a bit more and on some wingers.”
With Charlton now a Championship club, they need to recruit players who can operate competitively at that level.
Second-tier experience is crucial for staying in the division and the Addicks can’t afford to outlay a sizeable fee on a forward who could fail to perform.
Olaofe has credentials in the lower leagues, becoming the first Stockport County player to score 20 league goals in more than two decades. However, he is unproven at the Championship level.
If Jones has outlined the 25-year-old as a striker he wants to add to his frontline this summer, he must be trusted, but an element of risk currently surrounds the deal.
