McDiarmid Park after Champions League match in Germany

Two years ago today we headed to McDiarmid Park to take on St Johnstone in a Saturday lunch time kick off. As usual it was a must win game as we aimed to win to keep ahead at the top while putting more pressure on theRangers who played at Ibrox later in the afternoon.

It turned out to be one of those games. You know, the ones where we didn’t look as if we were at the races, and we were just going through the motions. Although our midweek defeat against RB Leipzig in Germany on Champions League duty could have had something to do with that.

The inevitable happened

We led at the break through an own goal and despite trying to add to that in the second half it didn’t look the cushion of a second goal would arrive. St Johnstone nearly made us pay by passing up two gilt edge opportunities, and it looked like we were going to get away with one.

Then deep in stoppage time the inevitable happened and St Johnstone scored after a free kick caused havoc in the Celtic box. The ball broke kindly for the St Johnstone player who didn’t make the same mistakes as his teammates and tucked the ball firmly in the net.

Disastrous for Celtic

It was disastrous for Celtic. We conceded with just over a minute of stoppage time remaining and we were staring at two valuable points needlessly and carelessly dropped.

The news spread quickly amongst theRangers supporters who were flocking into Ibrox, and according to Clyde 1 presenter Gordon Duncan car horns were beeping, while his old side-kick, Shug Keevins was purring at Celtic’s misery. They only have themselves to blame he said, theRangers will fancy their chances to put the pressure on Celtic, he purred.

But before Keevins could finish his gloating rant, and with theRangers supporters still dancing in the streets of  Govan. Goal flash! Big Giorgos Giakoumakis had put the ball in the net to win Celtic  all three points at McDiarmid Park, silence the Ibrox horns and leave egg on Shug’s face and not for the first time,

Celtic supporters were in a state of euphoria while theRangers supporters who were heading into Ibrox in party mode, were now resembling funeral goers. Wee Shug put his head in his hands. What a day that was!  Great Celtic memories. Don’t you just love a late winner?
