Taking centre stage in this week's instalement of Historic Goals is Manuel Velázquez. Very much a club man, he checked in at the Real Madrid youth set-up back in 1958 and was promoted to the first team in the 1965/66 season that saw the club capture its sixth European Cup crown. A creative midfielder, his biggest strengths were his technical ability, skill on the ball and elegance.

Matchday 2 of the 1967/68 league campaign saw Real Madrid entertain Real Sociedad at the Santiago Bernabéu as Velázquez helped himself to the matchball in a 9-1 romp. The opening goal came after the Whites regained possession in the middle of the pitch and launched a counter-attack in which Amancio picked out Velázquez, who planted the ball into the far corner.  Velázquez enjoyed a 12-season spell at Real Madrid, during which time he chalked up 402 apparances and 59 goals and lifted 10 trophies: a European Cup, six league titles and three Spanish Cups.
