Historic Goals: Míchel Salgado

This week’s edition of Historic Goals features Míchel Salgado. The defender joined Real Madrid in the summer of 1999 from Celta Vigo and made his name for the club down the right flank, forming a formidable full-back partnership with Roberto Carlos on the opposite wing that lasted for many years. Salgado’s anticipation, pace and ability to get in behind the defence made him one of the best players in his position.

In the 2004/2005 campaign, Real Madrid hosted Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabéu on matchday 33 of LaLiga. The goal we have chosen this week proved to be the winner in this game and it was also Salgado’s last for the club. With the game tied and Real Madrid down to ten men, the Whites had to dig deep and managed to turn the game around. Ronaldo crossed to the penalty spot to find the right-back who slid the ball into the back post past the goalkeeper. Míchel Salgado spent ten seasons at Real Madrid, playing 371 official matches and scoring five goals. The right-back won 11 trophies: two European Cups, one Intercontinental Cup, one UEFA Super Cup, four Spanish League titles and three Spanish Super Cups.
