Former Red Graeme Souness has been talking about Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum.

It has been reported that the Dutchman is set to depart Anfield on a free transfer come the end of the season.

Wijnaldum will reportedly sign for La Liga giants Barcelona.

With that being the case, Souness has suggested that Wijnaldum’s intensity within matches has dropped.

As quoted by HITC, Souness told The Times: “Wijnaldum is leaving for Barcelona and I’m not sure how I’d have reacted to a player who made it clear he was off, how that goes down in a dressing-room. The players may make a joke of it, but it also may not sit well with all of them. He’s not played with the same intensity this season.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Even though it does appear that Wijnaldum will depart Liverpool in the summer, we don’t believe that he has had a poor 2020-21 campaign for the club.

The Dutchman is averaging a WhoScored player rating of 6.75 across the 2020-21 campaign, which highlights that he has not been awful.

However, we would not be shocked if Wijnaldum was feeling fatigued. The 30-year-old has hardly missed a game for Liverpool this campaign.

Wijnaldum has made 44 appearances for Liverpool this season, which backs up the aforementioned argument.

We can’t be too critical of Wijnaldum. The midfielder has won four major trophies with the Reds.

As far as we are concerned, he is a club legend.
