Swansea City boss Russell Martin has revealed that Morgan Whittaker is firmly focused on his current side now following the closure of the January transfer window, speaking to his side’s media team.

The 22-year-old was the subject of much speculation last month following his recall from Plymouth Argyle, with the player putting himself in the shop window by recording nine goals and seven assists in 25 league appearances for Steven Schumacher’s men.

And with the player yet to make a competitive appearance for the Swans this season, he could have potentially moved on this winter with no shortage of interest in his signature.

In which year was the club formed?

1906 1908 1910 1912

Ipswich Town and sides from both the Premier League and the Championship had been linked with a move for him – but it was Scottish Premiership outfit Rangers that seemingly made the most effort to try and lure him away from the Swansea.com Stadium – having multiple bids rejected.

But he is set to be involved against Birmingham City this afternoon, with the player now committed to the Welsh outfit.

That’s according to Martin, who said: “I think he’s dealt with it really well, he’s come to see us and he’s said that he’s glad it’s behind us now and he’s getting ready to knuckle down and make an impact on the team.

“He has outstanding attributes and now it’s up to us to bring the best out of him.”

The Verdict:

This is a good outcome because Whittaker will need to be fully focused if he wants to break into the starting lineup, remain there and make a real impact like he did at Plymouth Argyle earlier in the season.

You can understand why he probably would have wanted to spend the rest of the season with the Pilgrims because it does feel as though he has unfinished business there, with Steven Schumacher’s side yet to seal promotion.

He was pretty much guaranteed a start at Home Park every week and he doesn’t have that at the Swansea.com Stadium, so he will need to knuckle down and impress in training if he wants to become one of the first names on the teamsheet in South Wales.

Martin has shown in the past that he isn’t afraid to make big calls, leaving Michael Obafemi out of the matchday squad on several occasions before he sealed a move to Burnley.

That’s why Whittaker needs to continue showing a good attitude in training – because regular game time now could be crucial for him in his quest to fulfil his potential and potentially seal a move to another club in the summer.
