Birmingham City could have the advantage in the race to sign Josh Windass from Sheffield Wednesday.

It has been reported that Windass has turned down a final contract offer from the Owls, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the month.

This has opened the door for clubs like Birmingham and West Brom to pursue a move for the forward.

Windass featured 25 times in the Championship last season, playing an important role in Danny Rohl’s side surviving in the division (all stats from Fbref).

He contributed six goals and two assists, as the Owls finished 20th in the table, three points clear of the relegation zone.

FLW’s Birmingham fan pundit Mike Gibbs believes that Windass would be a great addition to Chris Davies’ squad this summer.

While he is uncertain of whether a move is realistic amid competition from West Brom, he has claimed that regular game time might convince him to move to St. Andrew’s instead.

“I think it’d be an excellent signing if we could sign [Windass], especially getting ahead of the Albion as well,” Gibbs told Football League World.

“I think at a League One level, he’s a game changer, I think he can make a real difference, and I think he could be pretty prolific.

“He obviously had a good season or time down there when he was with Sheffield Wednesday.

“He’d be an absolute coup.

“Can I see us winning the battle for his signature? I don’t know.

“I think there’s obviously the project, the money we’ve got to spend, I think the fact that he might be guaranteed game time might be the clincher.

“Whereas at West Brom he might only be an impact player, coming off the bench.

“At his age now, I think he’s going to want to be playing week in and week out, so maybe the pull of regular football and what we’re proposing to do would be the differentiator for us.”

Josh Windass' importance to Sheffield Wednesday

Windass has been with Sheffield Wednesday since January 2020, and has gone on to feature 118 times for the Yorkshire outfit in the league since.

The forward has contributed 33 goals and 16 assists, playing a key role in the club’s rise back to the Championship in the 2022-23 campaign in particular.

But his contract is now set to expire at the end of the month, meaning he will be free to sign for any club of his choosing.

Birmingham will be hoping to secure his signature so that he can help their push for a place back in the Championship next year.

Windass move would be a solid addition for Birmingham

Windass being available as a free agent makes him a solid potential signing for Birmingham.

He knows what it takes to get out of League One, and can perform consistently well at that level as long as he stays fit.

As long as the Blues don’t take on too long or big of a contract, then this would be a really good addition to Davies’ squad.
