One sure could make a strong case today that Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar is the greatest player in world football today that has not won the Ballon d’Or in their career.
Neymar has come close to winning world football’s most prestigious individual honor, which includes finishing in third place behind both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the 2015 vote. Still, the Brazilian forward has not been voted as the best player in world football for any year so far.
For PSG midfielder Ander Herrera, he believes that the reason Neymar does not have a career Ballon d’Or win is due to the Brazilian being in the same era as both Messi and Ronaldo, which he explained further to the Spanish-based outlet Mundo Deportivo.
“Not having lived in the era of Messi and Cristiano, who have left no room for anyone but Modric for a year,” Herrera said. “And that was very commendable. These two guys have won a lot of Champions League titles and that also has an impact.”
Neymar was among the early favorites for the Ballon d’Or this year, although injuries prevented him from at the least being placed in the top 10 of the final vote.
The Brazilian sure does have what it takes to be among the serious contenders for this honor next year.
